The "Remarks" section in the table at the end of this document can help you determine whether your country qualifies. Universities may limit eligibility to certain Sub-Saharan nations only.


Although English can be used as the working language in many institutions, the majority of colleges teach in the native language of the nation.

Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship Initiative for Young African Researchers: Goals and Advantages

The participating Coimbra Group member universities provide financial support for the scholarships. 


Qualifying Standards for the Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship Program for Young African Researchers

All African nations, with the exception of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia, are eligible (applicants from these countries are eligible under the Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood).


All of the following requirements for applicants must be met at the same time:


• Be born on January 1, 1978, or later.


• Be citizens of and current inhabitants of a Sub-Saharan African nation.


• Be currently employed by a university or other comparable higher education facility in Sub-Saharan Africa.


• Have a PhD, postdoctoral, or comparable position, ideally.


• Have a letter or email of acceptance from the mentor or collaborator with whom you will complete the work program at the host institution. 


This document must be completed.


• Submit your application electronically through the Coimbra Group Office.


Apply just to one university. Numerous applications won't be taken into consideration.


• Send in only English-language submissions.

Coimbra Group Universities Scholarship Program for Young African Researchers Interview Date, Method, and Location: 


The Coimbra Group Office will conduct the administrative review of applications to identify applicants who satisfy the requirements. The host universities will be in charge of choosing the candidates. The host university may send a letter of invitation to the chosen candidate straight after a decision has been made. By the end of June 2023, the Coimbra Group Office will get in touch with every applicant and let them know how their application fared. Successful candidates must make sure that their home institution will give them a leave of absence to carry out the proposed visit if they are currently employed by a university.

The online application is accessible at www.coimbra-group.eu/activities/scholarships until 7 April 2023 at midnight (Brussels time).


For the 2023 iteration of the Coimbra Group Scholarship Program, only the institutions listed in the table below are participating.


Each application will receive a personal acknowledgement from the Coimbra Group Office. Candidates should get an email from the Coimbra Group Office within two weeks of submitting their online application confirming whether or not their application has been verified. The sole acknowledgement of receipt will be this one. Candidates whose applications were not submitted correctly or there was a technical issue will not receive the confirmation mail. It will be decided with the host tutor/partner institution the dates and the format of the visit that will take place at the host university during the academic year 2023–2024.


The host university should be consulted for any practical information regarding the mobility term, scholarship payment, certificates, and visa processes rather than the Coimbra Group Office. Candidates should choose a research supervisor at the host university and include his or her contact information in the application form. They can do this by visiting the university of their choice's website or by getting in touch with the contact person there (see the table below).

The host university should be consulted for any practical information regarding the mobility term, scholarship payment, certificates, and visa processes rather than the Coimbra Group Office.
