Through Dorothy J. Killam's will and gifts received during her lifetime, the Killam Scholarship and Prize Programmes were created in honor of Izaak Walton Killam.
Their main objective is to support the Canada Council for the Arts and five Canadian institutions that offer advanced study and research.
The Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies awards the UBC Killam Doctoral Scholarships each year.
Mrs. Killam wanted the people chosen to receive scholarships to: "Possess the potential to enhance knowledge or achieve distinction in a given field.
An unbalanced person should not be a Killam scholar. Intelligent distinction should be based on moral character."

In the Affiliated Fellowships competition, the top doctorate candidates receive about 15 to 20 grants each year.
The Killam Doctoral Scholarship currently offers a $30,000 annual stipend for two years along with a $2,000 grant for travel related to research during the 24 months of the scholarship*.

Qualifications for the University of British Columbia PhD Scholarship
By may 16, 2023, candidates must have finished their first 24 months of PhD studies.
The applicant must be an international student, a Canadian citizen, or a permanent resident of Canada.
The applicant will be nominated through the Affiliated Fellowships-Doctoral grant competition and must apply.
