Since welcoming its first students in 1583, the University of Edinburgh has produced notable people such as Nobel laureates, Olympic medalists, space explorers, and prime ministers.

The University was on the cutting edge of analysis and study in the decades that followed the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century.

The persistence and tenacity of a group of scholars from Edinburgh allowed for the bold and unrelenting challenging of accepted worldviews. David Hume, a well-known philosopher, economist, and essayist, was a member of this group.
